In honor of America's war veterans

Today is Veterans Day in the United States. Gathering around the Flatiron Building and around Madison Square Park, where the Veterans Day Parade begins in NYC are thousands of war veterans, young and old.

We honor and salute their service. In tribute to them here is ALAN'S WAR, by Emmanuel Guibert—one veteran's voice, from the second World War: Alan Cope, whose voice lives on through this work. And following it is a one-minute piece of artistic magic, from the making of this book.

The Amazing Remarkable Emmanuel Guibert (and where you can find him in New York City)

New York City has a visitor this week and next, and it's our extremely talented author Emmanuel Guibert

If you would like to gaze upon the awesomeness that is Emmanuel, and (gasp!) perhaps even talk to him, here is where you can find him:

Thursday:

Witness! Quiet Revolutions in Storytelling

From the photographs taken at Abu Ghraib, to police torture videos from Cambodia and Egypt, to blogs and Facebook groups for hunger-striking activists in Saudi Arabia, technology is affecting both who is reporting and what gets reported. What will be the cumulative effect of this quiet revolution? We’ll hear stories from Iraq, Europe, the United States, and intersections of all three.

Saturday:

What can pictures provide that words cannot?

[word is awesome!]

Drawing With Water

Alan's War, by Emmanuel Guibert, will be coming out next week, and we've been getting some questions: how does Emmanuel do it?  Is he creating this art with ink or pastels?

Emmanuel was kind enough to make us a video to answer this question.

And you should also take a look at the book!  boingboing says, "This is a kind of complimentary opposite to Maus: a story about a man whom war transformed into something better: tolerant, cosmopolitan, observant, and humane. "

SARDINE FAN MAIL

Jane in California wrote to us, asking us to tell Emmanuel Guibert that she loves the Sardine books and to please hurry up and make her a movie too.

We passed on the message. And here's what Emmanuel sent back:

Dessinsardine009

And Jane was thrilled:

Merci_jane

... and when she found out Emmanuel lived in Paris she told her dad "Oh, that's why he didn't understand me!" Her father asked her what she meant. She said "well I wasn't asking for a drawing, I was asking for a movie!"

With her father's help, she even wrote the following to Guibert:

Merci pour le dessin monsieur! S'il vous plait faire un film et un D.V.D de sardine pour moi et le terre. Jane!

... which I guess Monsieur Guibert will simply have to oblige!

Guibert's COMICS INTERVIEW at Powell's

Emmanuel Guibert is interviewed as part of the INK Q&A at the excellent Powell's Website. and he too answered in cartoon form! This is a treat!

As a reminder Powell's is the largest independent bookseller in America. Another cool thing in Portland.
