Hey there! Here's a new category in the :01 blog: YOUNG READERS CORNER! Brought on by popular demand, from the many librarians, booksellers, educators and parents begging for a list of "graphic novels' for ages 6 and up...

So YOUNG READERS CORNER will include highly recommended quality comics, and before long, it should be VERY OBVIOUS there's plenty of material out there to make a hoppin', happenin' section for the picture book set in every bookstore, library, classroom and children's room!

And you, cherished visitor, if you know of a MUST-HAVE title for this Young Reader's Corner, please, comment, comment away!

And of course, I'll be sure to mention the First Second Titles which belong here, such as SARDINE IN OUTER SPACE, available as of May 1st 2006 online or in your favorite bookstore, since we are wholeheartedly committed to helping raise the next generation of demanding Graphic Novel readers.

So we begin, with the most amazing THE ADVENTURES OF POLO by Regis Faller (from Roaring Brook Press, :01's parent company.)

It's exquisite, generous, surprising, thrilling, delightful storytelling, without any words -- and you can get a glimpse of Polo's world at the Polo website, although it's in French.

My granddaughter, one month shy of 3 years of age, has fallen in love with The Adventures of Polo by Regis Faller. It's a wonderful interactive book between adult and child. With her newly emerging verbal skills, she tells us the story of what's happening. The colorful pictures are fantastic and the adventures are a perfect mix for her growing mind. Thank you, Mr. Faller!

Sardine in Outer Space is so much fun, it's a great addition to the list of outstanding graphic novels for younger readers. I would include Owly by Andy Runton from Top Shelf Productions on this list, and Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma from ADV Manga. There are a number of these books that I recommend: Lions, Tigers and Bears by Mike Bullock (Alias Comics), Babymouse by Jennifer and Matthew Holm (Random House), the new Wizard of Oz graphic novel from Puffin Graphics, the new Babysitters Club graphic novel series adapted by Raina Telgemeier from Scholastic GRAPHIX, Spiral-Bound by Aaron Renier from Top Shelf Productions, Herobear and the Kid by Mike Kunkel, and The Land of Sokmunster by Kunkel and Randy Heuser. My younger son also loves media tie-in comics such as the Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Teen Titans Go and others from DC Comics, the Little Lulu reprints from Dark Horse Comics, ... I could go on. But the titles I've listed here are some of the books with high literary quality as well as fun illustrations for younger readers.
